Sonship

We were in the final days of our pregnancy awaiting the arrival of our first son. I am the last male descendant carrying our family name, so after having three beautiful daughters, I was humbled to find out we had a son on the way. The family name and its legacy would continue beyond me.

Our baby boy decided to come sooner than anticipated. It all happened fast. With no medical personnel in sight, I caught him in the middle of our home bathroom. With no time to be worried or fearful, he was in my arms before we could process what had happened. It was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life, and that evening in a hushed moment, I held him in a rocking chair in the corner of his nursery, thinking about how it had all happened.

As the shock of my own son’s sudden arrival wore off a bit, I was able to wonder and consider what kind of man he would become. As his father, what would I pass on? What traits would he take from me? Will he love camping and the outdoors? Will he be as stubborn as I am? What practices of mine would he imitate?

Inheritance is so much more than what you receive in a will or a trust. It’s more than money, property, or trinkets. A good father understands that inheritance is passed on in living even more than in dying. It’s delivered not in a lump sum but in a daily deposit of presence and care. It’s an inheritance of personhood.

Sonship brings our lives into divine order and alignment with God. So, in the middle of the chaos of life, we can know and declare: my identity is a son, my purpose is to enjoy the Father, my design is to subdue the earth and be fruitful and multiply, and my calling is to build the kingdom of God.

God is my father and I am his son
